Detailed Review: HP Envy 17T

In the face of such stiff opposition, you may not give this HP laptop a second look, but it does offer a few benefits that set it apart from the competition. Standard features include high-resolution OLED or IPS touchscreen technology, Nvidia graphics, and an Intel i7 or i9 central processing unit. Make every effort not to plan for very high prices. The pricing of the device that was tested, which is $1749, is comparable to that of other computers in the same category, such as the most recent MacBook Pro 16, which starts at $2499, and the Dell XPS 15, which starts at $1959.

There is always the possibility that with a cheaper price comes a lower quality, so let’s see whether it can hold its own and make it into our table of the best laptops for 2023. The HP Envy 17T is a budget laptop, and there is always the possibility that with a cheaper price comes a poorer quality.

Key Features

Get ready to enter the fascinating world of the HP Envy 17T and learn how to use its stunning capabilities. This laptop is no run-of-the-mill machine; rather, it’s a showy fusion of cutting-edge design and cutting-edge technology that packs a serious computing punch. The HP Envy 17T is here to make you envious, with a display that will leave you speechless and a processor that will leave you breathless. So settle down, kick back, and get ready to experience technology that will make you green with envy and long for this amazing gadget. The HP Envy 17T is a laptop to be envious of.

Battery Life

If you utilise this powerful portable carefully, you should be able to go through a whole workday on its battery life. In exceptional circumstances, you may even be able to get up to 10-12 hours of use out of the Envy.

High-Resolution Display

The Envy 17T OLED upgrade puts it in step with goods from Apple and Lenovo, making it an excellent choice for day-to-day creative work thanks to its high resolution (1920 x 1080) and excellent sRGB colour management. In addition, the quality of the basic IPS display makes it an excellent choice.

11th Gen Quad Core

The Core i7-12700H from Intel is a dependable, quick, and flexible multimedia production processor, and it can be upgraded to a Core i9. A Intel Xe Graphics complements it, providing capable gameplay and enhanced artistic capabilities.

HP Envy 17T Design

The HP Envy 17T is less expensive than some of its competitors, but it’s hard to miss the design influence. This laptop definitely took design cues from the MacBook Pro, with its rounded corners, recycled aluminium frame, and thin bezels around the screen. There are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 output, and a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connector on the right side of the Envy’s aluminium chassis, with the last two supporting charging through a barrel adapter. The left side of the device has a microSD card slot, an additional full-size USB connector, and a headphone jack.

I have no issues with the device’s internal connection thanks to the inclusion of dual-band Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The camera is state-of-the-art, boasting 5 megapixels of resolution, compatibility with Windows Hello, and a privacy switch with an attractive indicator light. The Envy’s camera is superior to those of competing laptops, and it also offers more ports than the Lenovo and Apple models.

Although some small flaws are to be anticipated at this price, the Envy might be improved in other ways as well. It lacks wired Internet access in the same way that its rivals do. The screen seems sturdy, however the bottom of the foundation is very flimsy. The Envy is bigger than its rivals, weighing in at 2.3 kilogrammes and measuring 20 millimetres in thickness.

Summary:

  • The webcam is quite high quality.
  • It’s a nice-looking gear, but it’s bulkier and heavier than similar models.
  • Good usability and connectivity options.

Keyboard

The Envy has satisfactory ergonomics. The keyboard is quick, smooth, and silent, although it would be nice if the keys were a little snappier. The positives include a respectable backlight and another set of buttons on the right. An emoji button, inspired by smartphone keyboards, loads a selection of emojis and gifs. The lack of a number pad and the presence of a Return key of uniform height are drawbacks. Even if the trackpad works great, the button pushes are too deep.

Screen

The review unit of the HP Envy 17T I tested had the cheapest of the three available display options. The 17.3-inch IPS panel has a resolution of 1920×1080, making it a relatively sharp picture, while the 16:10 aspect ratio provides more vertical real estate. For casual gaming, the 120 Hz refresh rate is more than enough. The standard of quality is also acceptable. With a Delta E of 1.4, this panel guarantees accurate colours, and its 418 nits of brightness make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor usage.

However, there is a good reason why this panel costs the least. The absence of true darkness in the deepest parts is a result of a black point of 0.36 nits. The HP display can reproduce 96% of the sRGB colour space, however it only manages to hit roughly 70% in Adobe RGB and DCI-P3.

This comes with a nasty surprise at the end. The finest screen option for the Envy is an OLED display, but it is not yet available in the UK and Europe, so customers in those regions may save money without sacrificing quality. The HP’s third screen option is a touch screen upgrade to the base IPS display for an additional $70. Touchscreen interfaces are the standard in the UK.

Summary:

  • For sRGB tasks, the default resolution of 1920×1080 is enough.
  • The OLED display is on par with the Retina display on the MacBook Pro.
  • The 120 fps refresh rate improves the quality of animation.

Battery

In spite of its strong hardware, the HP Envy 17T had excellent results in tests measuring its battery life. If you utilise the Envy for standard office duties, such as some light content development, you can use it for a whole workday without needing to charge it. The Envy was put through a test that replicated real-world conditions and was able to withstand nonstop usage for the whole 10 hours and 42 minutes. When you play a movie on your laptop with the screen brightness set down, the battery life may last for as long as 12 hours and 36 minutes if you are careful with how you use it.

If you want to genuinely push the components or use the Envy for gaming, you should plan on a more modest 90 minutes of use; this is a sad result, but it was not anticipated. That is longer than you can reasonably anticipate from an XPS, but the lifespan of a MacBook Pro is far more. Keep in mind that the OLED upgrade may cause your battery to deplete at a higher rate.

Summary:

  • With this notepad, you can get through the day with no problem.
  • Your battery life will suffer if you play games or overwork the internals.

Performance

The Intel Core i7-12700H is a very powerful CPU that, as a result of its six performance cores and eight efficiency cores, is capable of simultaneously managing a total of 20 threads. The performance cores are capable of reaching speeds of up to 4.7GHz in speed. The Envy boasts a decent TDP of 95W, in addition to its 16GB of dual-channel DDR5 RAM and its Intel Xe Graphics engine, which both have 6GB of dedicated memory, 3840 stream processors, and a total of 95W of thermal design power.

My experience has shown that the generation of Intel’s i7-12700H CPU found in the Envy is one of the fastest I’ve come across. The scores of 1779 and 12,214 on the single-core and multi-core versions of Geekbench, respectively, are outstanding. It seems like revolutionary computing has a bright future ahead of it. The Core i7 CPU is capable of handling demanding image processing duties in addition to standard video editing and encoding operations.

Only by upgrading to a Core i9-12900H CPU will you be able to greatly increase the system’s overall performance. If you want to take on more complex content creation tasks in the future, such as editing 4K video or using CAD, then you should consider making that purchase. The Envy model has a starting price of $1949 dollars. The Envy’s performance has a primary adversary in the shape of the M2 Pro CPU, which is now incorporated in the new MacBook Pro 16.

When it comes to gaming or creative applications, the HP is more than capable of holding its own. If you keep to a resolution of 1920 x 1800, it will be feasible for you to play challenging single-player games while maintaining a constant framerate.

Summary:

  • Insane amounts of processing power provided by the Intel i7 and Intel Xe Graphics.
  • More speed than what Dell is able to provide, but Apple’s next MacBook Pro 16 will be even quicker.
  • The Envy is a relatively quiet and cool device while under load.

Final Thoughts

The HP Envy 17T is a good device for generating media since it is quick, has excellent connection choices, lasts a long time, and can be purchased at a price that is affordable. However, if you want a screen that is guaranteed to be OLED, dimensions that are smaller or lighter, or a structure that is more robust, you should go elsewhere.
